Seth Godin on Social Networking
I will be straightforward with you upfront, but in an totally wishy-washy way.
I feel strongly both ways about Social Networking.
On the one hand if some of your work ‘hits the wave’ and goes viral on twitter or Facebook then that must be wonderful for you business, right? Also nearly every internet guru is going Facebook crazy at the moment. Aparently if you are not working hard on your ‘Fan Page’ then you are going nowhere.
On the other hand, I have a twitter account that I set up and did very little with, and I now have 200 followers. Some of those people have 100,000 followers and are following similar numbers themselves. Their twitter stream must be a snowstorm! A single tweet can’t mean anything to them. Also what about these people that have thousands of friends on Facebook? In my experience it is a struggle to keep up with a dozen or so real life friends. Sure the internet makes it easier, but there can’t be any real depth to those friendships.
On balance I probably come down in line with these comments from Seth Godin that he made in 2009. Clever guy Seth. I think he speaks a lot of sense in answering the question ‘Is social networking valuable for business?’.
